Stylinodontids are now pre-primates in the LRT

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Only obvious in hindsight,
a series of stylinodontids (Fig 1) now nest as descendants of Late Eocene Agriochoerus latifrons, the ‘artiodactyl with thumbs’ (Fig 1), close to Notharctus (Fig 2), the basal-most primate in the large reptile tree (LRT, 2328 taxa).

These taxa are some of the most primitive placental1 taxa in the LRT. All are derived from Nasua, the extant coatimundi, which now nests as the last common ancestor of all placental1 taxa.

Figure 1. Agriochoerus latifrons is now basal to Lophiodon and the stylinodontids in the LRT. Not to scale.

Earlier,
the large adapid = lemur from Madagascar, Megaladapis (Fig 2) was matched to Agriochoerus latifrons. Adding stylinodontids (Fig 1) came as a surprise and a solution. These were all herbivores.

Groeberia
(Fig 1) is a new addition. It was earlier mistakenly nested with Vintana and other odd marsupials.

So many updates
are sitting on the shelf, waiting for the mammal subset of the LRT to settle down and become fully resolved. The LRT changes daily as scores change.

This appears to be a novel hypothesis of interrelationships.
