Origin of marsupial moles in the LRT

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Today marsupial moles are restricted to Australia.
So when we see marsupial mole relatives. like the golden mole, Chrysochloris (Fig 1), in Southern Africa, that’s good evidence that those two continents were once linked as integral parts of the supercontinent Gondwanaland.

Today’s question is:
where did marsupial moles come from? That had to have happened before the continental split.

Figure 1. The origin of marsupial moles in the LRT includes Asioryctes, Notoryctes and three placentals (by convergence with most other placentals. Here Miocene Necroletes is a placental2 close to the extant golden mole, Chrysochloris. ” data-image-caption=”

Chronologically
Docofossor, from the Middle Jurassic, is the oldest taxon in this lineage (Fig 1). Phylogenetically more primitive taxa, like Glironia and Dromiciops (Fig 1) are living fossils with extant representatives of this genus living in Australia. Their genesis preceded the Middle Jurassic.

For reasons and influences currently unknown,
(perhaps viruses) two of these taxa in figure 1, Uropsilus and Chrysochloris, developed a placenta. That was the second of three or four instances of this innovation. Notoryctes is extinct, but phylogenetic bracketing gives it a placenta, too.

Uropsilus is currently restricted to China and SE Asia,
far from Australia during the Jurassic. Evidently some land strips must have split off of Northern Australia carrying Uropsilus with them. These must have formed parts of Indonesia with later land bridges to China.

This needs further study.

Uropsilus scoricipes
(Milne-Edwards 1871; Hoffmann 1984, central China) is the extant shrew-mole, long considered the link between shrews and moles. Here Uropsilus nests between the marsupial moles, like Notoryctes, and the golden mole, Chrysochloris (below). Note the lack of canines, deep premaxilla and arched jugal.
