Let’s compare Numidotherium to Deinotherium
This is part 1 of a 2-part series on elephants and their relatives.
Deinotherium (Fig 1) is an odd proboscidian uniquely lacking upper incisors and uniquely having lower incisors that curl back toward its throat.
Relatively little Numidotherium is the closest relative among taxa tested in the LRT.

Numidotherium savagei
(Jaeger in Mahboubi et al 1986, middle Eocene, 46mya, 1m tall at shoulder, 37cm skull length) is known from an almost complete skeleton. It was more slender and plantigrade than later elephants. It grazed freshwater vegetation in a swamp or riverine environment. This taxon links Deinotherirum to other elephants.
Deinotherium giganteum
(Kaup 1829; Late Miocene) is a large gomphothere lacking premaxillary teeth. The dentary teeth curl ventrally. Numidotherium is a sister in the LRT.
Let’s look for the transitional taxa linking these two disparate, yet close relatives.
