How close are possums and coatimundis?

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

The origin
of the Placental1, 2 and 3 clades in the LRT has been difficult to ascertain, and the problem is still not yet settled. Today, we’re one step closer by linking Didelphis the opossum with Nasua the coatimundi (Fig 1), basal to primates and carnivores.

Both are ancient. Both are extant.

Figure 1. Above: Didelphis, the Virginia, opossum, compared to scale with Nasua, the coatimundi, basal to Carnivora and Primates. Note the overal similarities including the obtuse squamosal, a rare trait.

Differences exist, to be sure.
The question is: are any other taxa closer to one another than the individual taxa currently nested in the large reptile tree (LRT, 2328 taxa).

Today the answer is ‘no’. (Tomorrow is another day).

Everything depends on scoring,
which depends on interpretation. Some details presented today have been revised from earlier interpretations.

With Nasua closer to Didelphis
we now have a fourth origin of the placental grade. The new one appears with the large, herbivores coming off of monodelphids.

Perhaps this is why Mammalia has been the most difficult clade to understand.
