From the Personal Branding Blog

What is it about true crime that hooks so many of us? From binge-watching documentaries to tearing through murder mysteries, an obsession with the macabre might seem unusual—or even unsettling—to outsiders.

But psychologists suggest there’s more to this fascination than meets the eye.

True crime enthusiasts often share unique psychological traits, offering insights into why these stories captivate them.

If you’re among the countless fans who can’t get enough, this article will explore the distinctive characteristics that make true crime lovers tick—backed by science.

There’s something fascinating about the people who binge-watch true crime documentaries or devour murder mystery novels.

To some, it might seem morbid – why the interest in the macabre?

If you’re like me, a self-proclaimed true crime junkie, you might be intrigued to know what these traits are.

In this article, we’ll delve into the mind of a true crime aficionado and explore these unique characteristics – straight from the psychologist’s chair.

1) Curious minds

True crime enthusiasts are typically characterized by an intense curiosity. They’re not satisfied with just the surface details – they want to know the why and how behind the happenings.

This curiosity is a healthy trait. It drives us to seek understanding and knowledge, and encourages critical thinking.

This doesn’t mean that true crime fans are budding detectives or have a dark fascination with violence. Rather, they are intrigued by the psychological elements – what drives someone to commit such heinous acts?

In essence, their love for true crime content is a manifestation of their thirst for understanding human behavior.

But remember, while this curiosity is healthy, it’s essential to balance it with empathy and respect for real-life victims involved in these cases.

2) Empathy and understanding

Interestingly, it’s not a fascination with gore or violence that draws us in. It’s the emotional narratives. We feel for the victims and their families, and we want justice to be served.

We’re also drawn to understanding the perpetrators’ motivations. Not because we condone their actions, but because we want to understand what drives a person to such extremes.

For instance, whenever I watch true crime documentaries or read true crime books, I find myself feeling deeply for the victims and their families.

The sense of injustice can be overwhelming at times. At the same time, I can’t help but wonder about the conditions or circumstances that led the criminals down such a dark path.

It’s this blend of empathy and understanding that truly defines us as true crime fans. But again, it’s crucial to remember that this fascination should never translate into glorifying or romanticizing these criminals or their actions.

3) Seeking safety

It might seem counterintuitive, but delving into true crime stories can actually help us feel safer. By understanding the dark corners of human nature, we can better equip ourselves to avoid danger.

In a strange way, consuming true crime content can be a form of self-defense. It’s about learning the warning signs, understanding risky situations, and knowing how to protect ourselves and our loved ones.

Of course, it’s crucial not to let this drive us into paranoia. True crime content can be informative and eye-opening, but we need to remember that they represent the extremes of human behavior and not the norm.

4) Practicing mindfulness

This might surprise you, but they are often excellent practitioners of mindfulness. They are fully present when they immerse themselves in a story, absorbing details, critically analyzing the information, and empathizing with the people involved.

Now, you might ask, how is binge-watching a true crime series or reading a gritty crime novel practicing mindfulness? Well, it’s all about how engaged and present we are during the process.

In my book, “The Art of Mindfulness: A Practical Guide to Living in the Moment”, I delve into what mindfulness truly means. It’s not just about meditating or doing yoga; it’s about being fully engaged in whatever we’re doing at any given moment. Whether it’s washing dishes or reading a book, mindfulness is about being present and fully absorbed in the task at hand.

So, in essence, our love for true crime content can actually help us practice mindfulness—immersing ourselves in the stories, being present with our reactions and emotions, and engaging our critical thinking skills.

Of course, as I discuss in my book, it’s important to strike a balance and ensure we’re also practicing mindfulness in other aspects of our lives.

5) Finding comfort in chaos

Here’s a paradox for you: they often find a sense of comfort in these dark narratives. It might seem strange, but there’s a simple explanation.

True crime stories, despite their grim nature, often have a clear narrative structure: a crime occurs, an investigation unfolds, and finally, justice is served. This narrative provides a sense of order and resolution to the chaotic and often inexplicable nature of these crimes.

Moreover, the very act of engaging with these stories from a safe distance gives us control over our fears. We can explore the darker aspects of human nature without any real-world danger.

So, while it might seem odd at first glance, finding comfort in true crime content is not as counter-intuitive as it seems. It’s an exploration of our fears from a position of safety and control.

6) Fascination with justice

They often share a deep fascination with the justice system. They’re intrigued by the process, from investigation to trial and finally, the verdict.

This fascination is not limited to the legal aspects. It also extends to the moral implications and questions that these cases often bring up. What constitutes justice? How is it served? What are the repercussions when it’s not?

Diving into true crime stories allows us to explore these questions and grapple with the complexities of justice. It’s a window into a world that we wouldn’t normally experience, allowing us to reflect on our own moral frameworks and societal norms.

7) Storytelling enthusiasts

One thing that often goes unnoticed is that they are, at heart, lovers of a good story. Yes, the stories are real and often grim, but they are stories nonetheless.

I remember how as a child, I would be captivated by mystery novels and suspense thrillers. Little did I know, these interests were precursors to my fascination with true crime.

The appeal of true crime lies in its storytelling – the plot twists, the suspense, the character development. It’s a testament to the power of narrative and the human fascination with understanding others’ experiences.

As we delve into these real-life mysteries, we’re not just passive consumers. We actively engage with the storyline, form theories, and anticipate resolutions. This active participation is a key trait of those who enjoy true crime content.

8) Emotional resilience

True crime content is not for the faint-hearted. It exposes us to the harsh realities of life and the darker side of human nature. Therefore, those who regularly consume this content often possess a level of emotional resilience.

This resilience allows them to delve into these heavy narratives without becoming overwhelmed. It’s an ability to process intense emotions and still maintain a balanced perspective.

However, it’s essential for true crime fans to be aware of their limits and not let this content adversely impact their mental health. Emotional resilience is about understanding and managing emotions, not suppressing or ignoring them.

9) A desire for understanding

At the heart of every true crime enthusiast’s interest lies a profound desire for understanding. It’s not about a fascination with crime or violence, but rather, a deep-seated need to understand why these things happen.

They seek to comprehend the motivations behind these crimes, the circumstances that led to them, and the way society and the justice system respond to them.

This desire for understanding is perhaps the most defining trait of a true crime enthusiast.

Final thoughts

At its core, our fascination with true crime isn’t about glorifying violence or sensationalizing the dark corners of humanity.

It’s a journey into the intricacies of the human psyche, a way of confronting moral ambiguity, and an attempt to find order in the midst of chaos.

This interest speaks to our innate curiosity, our desire to empathize, and our capacity to find meaning in complexity.

In my book “The Art of Mindfulness: A Practical Guide to Living in the Moment”, I explore how mindfulness helps us connect more deeply with ourselves and others. This same drive for understanding fuels our captivation with true crime—a desire to unravel the threads of human behavior and uncover what lies beneath the surface.

So the next time you’re hooked on a true crime series or immersed in a suspenseful novel, consider this: it’s more than just the story of the crime.

It’s a reflection of your own quest for clarity, your appreciation for layered narratives, and your ability to engage deeply with the emotions and experiences of others.

It’s not just entertainment—it’s a mirror of what makes us human.
